The total volume of information technology market in Turkey is USD 2.4 billion. 300 million dollars of this is obtained from export of software products. This is approximately equivalent to 12-13 percent. More than 50% of the software is imported and sold by international companies. That is to say that a part of 150-200 million dollars is made up of imported products. Consequently local software industry has a market of 100 million dollars. Considering that the income India earns from software exportation is 11 billion dollars, it becomes obvious how Turkey lagged behind.
Erol Bilecik is the first name that comes to mind when we talk about information technology in Turkey. He founded Index Computer Systems in Turkey in 1989 and established the largest information distribution network. He also served as the chairman of Association of Turkish Information Industrialists for a long term. When we ask him about the status of information technology in Turkey, Bilecik says, "The information technology sector in Turkey is too young. The mass adoption of information technologies dates back to the beginning of '90s. Between 2000-2004 information technology came to a standstill. But at the end of 2004 the volume of sector reached 2.4 billion dollars. Consequently we had the chance of reaching the total trading volume we had in 2000. Still the total market size is below the annual turnover of large corporations. I hope soon the strategic importance of informatics will be discovered in Turkey."
