When we talk about detective novels in Turkey, Ahmet Umit is the one to remember. His books sell 100 thousand on average in a year and he lives off on writing.

Umit says, "When we look at the patients in the hospitals, we see that psychopaths or mentally disordered people are few in number. They are normal ones. There is a thin line in between. When you cross this border you can be a killer. The instinct to murder is inside us. Anybody can be a killer." According to Umit one of the reasons why detective novels become best sellers is people's tendency to live under tension without taking a risk. When it comes to the point that there are not so many detective novelists in Turkey, Umit says, "The history of novel in Turkey dates back to just 200 years ago. In Europe detective novel was accepted after the World War II. Consequently it is being accepted in Turkey recently. In the past detective novels in Turkey were humiliated as they were in Europe. Something began to change with what I wrote. Now many people authors detective novels, people get to know that detective novels are good. Because detective stories not only tell about the crime. It includes all the elements and data of the other novel as well."
